“If you want to change the world, pick up your pen and write.” Martin Luther King Jr
We believe that the development of literacy skills underpins all other areas of our curriculum. At Hailey, children experience a wide range of activities in reading, writing, speaking and listening as we encourage them to become confident communicators, able to express their thoughts, ideas and feelings. Our aim for English is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop a love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. We aim to create successful fluent readers by teaching children decoding and comprehension strategies such as inference, questioning, summarising and prediction. We use a rich and varied reading curriculum which helps pupils to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually.
We use a number of approaches to inspire writing throughout the school and actively embed the skills of spelling, grammar, handwriting and punctuation throughout all areas of the curriculum.
We also appreciate the importance of drama which encourages the development of an active, vivid imagination.
A high quality education in English will teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them.
